Understand the dormitory offer
Ask whether a quoted room is single or shared, whether the rate is per person or per room, and whether charges apply during holidays. Confirm bathroom and kitchen arrangements, utilities, internet, laundry and any bedding you need to bring.
Read the room-allocation process. A request, application or scholarship decision is not necessarily a confirmed room. ECNU’s reviewed programme page describes accommodation reservations subject to availability; that is a reminder to read the housing instructions separately from academic admission.

Check permission before looking off campus
University rules can limit your options. Zhejiang Normal University’s 2026 language guide requires first-year students to live on campus. Other institutions and scholarship arrangements may have different rules. Ask your own international office before paying a private rental deposit.
If off-campus living is permitted, establish who must approve it and what documents you must submit. Ask how changing address affects university records and local registration. The answer should come from the institution and the relevant authority, not only a landlord.

Read a private rental contract carefully
View the actual property or arrange a reliable live viewing. Check the address, room condition, furniture, utility meters and the person authorised to let it. Use a contract you understand; arrange an independent explanation when necessary.
Clarify the rent period, deposit, agency fee, utilities, maintenance responsibilities, notice period and early-termination rules. Photograph the condition at handover, record meter readings and obtain receipts for payments. Do not assume that a deposit will cover your final month’s rent unless the contract says so.
Complete accommodation registration
The National Immigration Administration states that hotels register foreign guests. For accommodation outside hotels, the foreign resident or host must complete registration with the relevant public security authority within 24 hours of arrival. Confirm with your university how this is handled for its dormitories.
A March 2026 NIA notice describes an online registration pilot in seven provincial-level regions. Do not assume that one online system is available everywhere: use the procedure for your location and obtain help if you cannot complete it.

Plan a workable arrival day
Share your expected arrival time with the accommodation office and ask what happens if your flight is late. Keep the address in Chinese, the office contact and a backup plan accessible without internet. If you need a hotel before the dormitory opens, verify that booking and check-in requirements in advance.
- Room confirmation and exact check-in hours.
- Passport and admission documents ready for check-in.
- Payment method and deposit amount.
- A record of the room condition and inventory.
- Confirmation of the accommodation-registration process.
- Contact for urgent maintenance or a lockout.
Review the arrangement after moving in
Check that your receipt, contract and actual room match. Report problems promptly and in writing. Learn how to pay utilities, receive parcels and contact the housing office. If you later move, ask which records must be updated before leaving the old address.
A comfortable room is not necessarily a large room. For a student, reliable access, a manageable commute, quiet study time and clear responsibilities can matter more than a listing’s photographs.
Common questions
Does a scholarship automatically reserve a dormitory room?
Do not assume it does. Confirm the housing allocation and booking process with the host university.
Can I rent off campus as a first-year student?
It depends on your university and funding rules. Get permission before signing or paying.
