X1 and X2: the basic distinction
The Chinese Visa Application Service Center categorises X1 as long-term study exceeding 180 days and X2 as short-term study of no more than 180 days. Let the institution and responsible visa office guide the category for your actual programme.
Do not choose a category simply because another student received it. Course dates, issued documents and individual circumstances can differ. Also distinguish the visa’s last date for entry from the period you may stay after entering.

Prepare the documents for your application location
The Paris X1 checklist, for example, lists the admission notice and the relevant JW201 or JW202 study form. This is an example of official documentation, not a universal instruction to submit the identical package at every consulate. Your institution may provide electronic documents and directions for the applicable process.
Use the local visa office’s current list for the passport, application form, photograph, study documents and any additional evidence. Check whether an appointment, online review, biometrics or in-person submission applies to you. Submit accurate information and leave enough time to correct document errors.

After arrival: enrolment and residence formalities
The National Immigration Administration says that when a visa requires a residence-permit application after entry, it must be filed within 30 days. Its student-permit instructions refer to the school’s study-period letter and admission or enrolment evidence. Contact the university immediately after arrival to organise the applicable process.
University registration, accommodation registration and a residence-permit application are separate tasks. Ask the international office for a dated arrival checklist. Confirm any required medical examination or verification and retain the application receipt while your passport is being processed.

Plan travel around your documents
Before leaving mainland China during your course, check whether your current document permits return and whether it will still be valid on your return date. A single-entry visa is not the same as a multiple-entry arrangement. Ask the responsible authority if the wording is unclear.
Keep secure copies of your passport identity page, visa or permit, admission documents and important receipts. Store emergency contacts somewhere you can access without your phone. If your passport changes or is lost, contact the relevant authorities and university rather than assuming the old records automatically update.
Do not assume student status authorises a job
NIA guidance says that off-campus part-time work or internships for holders of student residence permits require school approval and the relevant remarks on the permit specifying the place and duration. Student status alone is not permission to begin an off-campus role.
Discuss a proposed internship with the university before accepting or starting it. Do not build your minimum study budget around work that has not been authorised.

Before you book and before you arrive
Use the checklist as a planning aid, then replace it with the instructions for your individual application.
- Confirm the programme dates and admission documents.
- Open the official checklist for your submission location.
- Check names, passport details and dates across the documents.
- Read the issued visa’s entries, validity and duration carefully.
- Arrange accommodation and identify the registration process.
- Ask the university about arrival, medical and residence-permit appointments.
- Check expiry dates before any travel or extension request.
Common questions
Can I use a tourist or visa-free stay for my course?
Do not assume that permission to visit covers your study plan. Ask the institution and responsible visa authority which entry arrangement is required.
Does X2 automatically give me multiple entries?
No. Read the entries and duration on your issued document and confirm your travel plans with the relevant authority.
