Schwarzman and Yenching: Two China Master’s Fellowships

Schwarzman Scholars and Yenching Academy are two distinct postgraduate opportunities connected to major universities in Beijing. They deserve a separate comparison from general scholarship lists because you are applying to a particular academic experience, not simply seeking a tuition waiver for any master’s degree.

Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University

Schwarzman Scholars describes its programme as a fully funded, one-year master’s degree and leadership programme at Tsinghua in Beijing. Its listed scholarship includes tuition and fees, room and board, travel to and from Beijing, an in-country study tour, health insurance and a personal stipend.

Investigate it if you want to connect your existing interests to global affairs and leadership. Examine the curriculum and application criteria directly. A strong reason to study in China is useful, but it must connect to what this particular programme teaches.

Yenching Academy at Peking University

Yenching Academy offers a master’s in China Studies. Its FAQ states that admitted students receive the Yenching Fellowship for the first academic year, including tuition, accommodation, a round-trip travel stipend, basic medical insurance, a monthly stipend and research-related expenses. Check the current conditions for support beyond that first year.

The admissions page reviewed for this article states that applications for the 2027 cohort start on September 1, 2026. Use the live page for the deadline, eligibility and submission instructions; do not carry a prior cohort’s timetable into your application.

Choose by the questions you want to study

Write down three questions you want a master’s programme to help you answer. Then compare them with each programme’s courses, research expectations and learning format. Read enough detail to explain why one environment would serve your goals better.

Your application should connect past choices, current ability and future plans. If your experience is in engineering, public policy, business, language or the arts, explain how it prepares you for the specific course rather than assuming your subject label speaks for itself.

Prepare evidence for your application

Make an inventory of experiences you can discuss accurately: a project you completed, a research problem you explored, a team responsibility or a community activity. Note what you did, the result and what you learned. This is stronger than a list of prestigious names or abstract statements about impact.

  • Read the current application instructions and eligibility tests.
  • Check the degree completion date and English-language evidence.
  • Choose referees who know your actual academic or professional work.
  • Answer the essay prompt directly with specific examples.
  • Prepare for interviews by discussing both your strengths and unanswered questions.
  • Check scholarship duration, housing, travel arrangements and any personal costs.

Keep a wider postgraduate plan

These fellowships may be a good fit for some applicants and unsuitable for others. If your main aim is a specialised laboratory, clinical qualification or narrowly defined technical degree, compare conventional graduate programmes too.

Do not treat rejection from one fellowship as a verdict on all study opportunities in China. A programme with a better supervisor match or a more relevant curriculum may be the stronger long-term choice. Keep a record of alternatives and their independent deadlines.

Common questions

Are these scholarships available for any degree at the host university?

No. Each is attached to its own programme. Other degrees use different admission and funding routes.

Does Yenching’s first-year fellowship description guarantee later funding?

No. Read the current continuation rules and ask the academy to clarify support for your full study plan.
