CSC Scholarship Guide: Routes, Funding and Applications

The Chinese Government Scholarship is administered by the China Scholarship Council, commonly called CSC. It is a major funding route to investigate, but “CSC scholarship” does not describe one universal application with one deadline. Your country, university, study level and chosen scheme determine the process.

Type A versus Type B

The official overview describes the bilateral Type A route as an application through the dispatching authority in the applicant’s home country. Type B university programmes are handled through participating Chinese universities. Eligible study levels depend on the specific programme.

Begin by identifying who nominates you. For Type A, this may involve a ministry or another designated authority. For Type B, read the university’s scholarship notice. Copying another applicant’s agency number can send an otherwise complete file to the wrong place.

What a full award can cover

The official overview lists tuition, university accommodation or an accommodation subsidy, a stipend and comprehensive medical insurance. It lists monthly stipends of RMB 2,500 for undergraduates, RMB 3,000 for master’s students/general scholars and RMB 3,500 for doctoral students/senior scholars. Confirm the terms of the actual award; partial awards and particular schemes may differ.

Check whether travel, deposits, medical checks, family expenses and an extra language year are included. Do not infer coverage just because an expense is necessary for your trip.

Read academic, language and assessment rules separately

The 2026/2027 embassy notice cited here requires bachelor’s scholarship applicants to submit CSCA results and seek pre-admission documentation. Its deadline belonged to that particular country and intake; it is not a worldwide deadline for your application.

Make an eligibility sheet before writing your study plan: nationality category, qualification, age rule, teaching language, test requirement and subject restrictions. If two official instructions appear inconsistent, ask the receiving authority and university to clarify in writing.

Prepare an application that fits the programme

A useful study plan connects your previous work to a specific course or research question. Explain what you are prepared to study, why the host programme fits and what you intend to do with the training. Evidence is more helpful than broad claims about wanting an international experience.

  • Choose the scheme and verify the university/programme is eligible.
  • Check whether a university application is required in addition to the CSC portal.
  • Request references early and give referees your course and research details.
  • Match passport spelling and dates across every file.
  • Submit before the relevant authority’s deadline and save confirmation.
  • Monitor requests for corrections, interviews or additional documents.

Separate nomination from the final award

A pre-admission letter, a university recommendation and a final scholarship result are different stages. Keep your alternative funding or admission options open until you have the formal outcome.

If you receive an award, check its duration, annual review conditions, arrival requirements and the process for receiving the stipend. Keep a small arrival reserve so that your first meals and local transport do not depend on an immediate payment. Never accept a private promise that a scholarship is guaranteed.

Common questions

Is every Type B scholarship fully funded?

Do not assume so. Read the precise university notice and final award terms; the route label alone is not a complete funding package.

Is there one CSC deadline?

No. The dispatching authority, university and scholarship scheme can have different deadlines.
