Mandarin Language Schools in China: Compare Your Options

A good Mandarin programme matches your starting level, learning goal and available time. Someone preparing for Chinese-taught university study needs a different course from a visitor seeking four weeks of speaking practice. Compare teaching structure and student support before deciding which school name to put on your application.

Four university programmes to investigate

Beijing Language and Culture University publishes a dedicated non-degree programme announcement; use its current admissions guide to compare available course formats. East China Normal University offers a Standard Chinese Language Program. The reviewed ECNU page lists 20 class hours per week, with a class hour defined as 45 minutes, and tuition of RMB 12,000 per semester.

Peking University’s 2026 summer brochure offered four-, six- and eight-week formats. That summer intake is a past example, not an open application promise. Zhejiang Normal University’s 2026 language guide describes a semester or academic-year route. Check the next intake before paying any fee.

Compare university courses and private schools

A university programme can suit a learner who wants a semester structure and campus setting. A private language school may offer a different schedule, class size or one-to-one tuition. These are features to verify, not guarantees attached to the type of provider.

Ask a private school for its registration details, written contract, lesson schedule, teacher arrangements, refund policy and the precise documents it can provide for study-related immigration procedures. A marketing claim about “visa assistance” is not proof that your planned course supports the visa you need.

Match the syllabus to your goal

For everyday conversation, look for frequent speaking practice, useful listening tasks and feedback on pronunciation. For HSK preparation, ask how the programme combines vocabulary and reading with listening and speaking. For degree preparation, investigate academic writing, note-taking and classroom discussion.

Ask how students are placed and whether you can move if the initial level is wrong. Request an example timetable and describe what you already know. “Beginner” can cover very different starting points, from no Pinyin to months of self-study.

Request a complete written quote

Put each quote on the same basis: teaching weeks, actual classroom hours, tuition and compulsory extras. Add accommodation, books, transport and any activities you intend to join. A short course’s weekly price is not directly comparable with a semester fee.

Read the withdrawal conditions before paying. Ask what happens if enrolment is too low, your visa arrives late or the course level is unsuitable. Confirm who receives the payment and how you receive an official receipt.

  • Intake dates, teaching weeks and holiday breaks.
  • Class hours in minutes and expected class size.
  • Placement method and level-change policy.
  • Books, examinations and activities included in tuition.
  • Dormitory availability or independent accommodation support.
  • Visa documentation, refund terms and the official payment method.

Make the most of the first month

Arrive knowing basic Pinyin, tones, numbers and a few practical phrases. You do not need to sound fluent; you need enough confidence to ask for repetition and practise outside class. Set one weekly goal, such as ordering a meal without switching languages.

Keep a small record of expressions you hear repeatedly and ask your teacher how to use them. A city can provide opportunities to practise, but progress still depends on regular, deliberate use of the language.

Common questions

Which Mandarin school is best for beginners?

Choose a programme that confirms beginner placement, sufficient speaking practice, clear fees and suitable support. There is no single best school for every learner.

Does a course certificate equal a university degree?

No. Check whether the programme is degree or non-degree and what qualification it actually awards.
