Understand the study categories
BLCU’s 2026 guide includes degree routes and shorter study periods. Its one-academic-year route is funded for 11 months, its one-semester route for five months and its four-week route for four weeks. Those are the categories in that guide, not a promise that every host offers every option for every intake.
Decide whether your goal is general Mandarin, a teaching qualification or academic work in Chinese language and literature. Read the curriculum alongside the funding conditions; a course designed for future teachers may not match someone who only wants conversational practice.

Check HSK and speaking-test requirements
As a specific 2026 example, BLCU’s one-year Chinese-language-study category requires HSK 3 with 210 points and gives preference to applicants submitting HSKK results. Other categories in the same guide have different requirements. Do not apply this example to a degree or to another year.
Put the exact test, level, minimum score and accepted validity period in your checklist. Book an exam only after checking the current guide and allowing time for the score report to arrive.

Plan the recommendation and host steps
Use the official scholarship section on chinese.cn and your target institution’s current notice to identify the application route. The BLCU guide directs applicants to check recommending institutions and receiving universities.
Contact your potential recommending institution early. Ask what it needs from you, whether it can recommend applicants for your chosen category and when it must receive your materials. A host application and a recommendation are separate tasks; track both.

Show a coherent language-learning plan
Describe your current level with evidence: a recent test, completed study or a realistic account of what you can do. Explain the next skills you want to develop and how the host course would help. Avoid claiming teaching experience you do not have.
If you intend to teach Chinese, explain the audience or setting you hope to work in and why the programme’s teaching components matter. If you are choosing a language-study category, make sure your explanation is consistent with that category’s stated purpose.
- Compare the current guide with your planned intake and age category.
- Check degree or non-degree eligibility and language results.
- Confirm recommendation and host application procedures.
- Ask what the award covers beyond tuition.
- Keep copies of submitted files and monitor requests for corrections.
Plan beyond acceptance
Before accepting an award, confirm its dates, housing arrangements, insurance and attendance expectations. Ask whether any costs are due before registration. Also check what happens if you miss the arrival date, interrupt your study or need to leave early.
A scholarship can support a defined period of study; it does not remove the need to plan your next step. Decide whether you will return home, apply separately for a degree or continue language learning after the funded period.
Common questions
Is this scholarship only for people who already teach Chinese?
Eligibility depends on the category and current rules. Review the official purpose and requirements rather than assuming that every applicant must already be a teacher.
Can a beginner use the HSK 3 example as an admission guarantee?
No. It is one category’s stated threshold, not an award guarantee, and other routes have different conditions.
