Settling into your dorm: what does the room have?

How to use these phrases

有 (yǒu) means 'to have' and also expresses that something exists. Start with the place: 房间里有桌子。 means 'There is a desk in the room.' 里 means 'inside'. To ask about a facility, add 吗: 房间里有空调吗? Negate 有 with 没有, not 不有. 房间里没有空调。 means 'There is no air conditioner in the room.' Compare this with 在 from Lesson 1: 有 introduces what exists in a place; 在 tells you where a particular thing is. 房间里有桌子 introduces a desk, while 桌子在房间里 locates the desk. Read the six cards as a conversation with a roommate. Ask about two things using 有…吗, then give one positive and one negative answer. The word 无线网 means a wireless network; you will also hear people say 'Wi-Fi' in everyday conversation. Ask for a password only as a language role-play; use an invented example if you practise with a partner.
